The Door To Yesterday, Curtis Mayfield, Carl Davis, Riley Hampton, Donny Hathaway, Bill Sheppard

The Door To Yesterday. Curtis Mayfield, Gil Askey, Jan Bradley, Billy Butler, Jerry Butler,2020

Chicago-born singer/songwriter/guitarist/producer/record label owner CURTIS MAYFIELD (1942-1999)

was one of the giants of both black music and the development of soul. Heavily influenced by gospel,

he wrote an enormous list of successful songs among which were ballads that mirrored his earnest belief

in the civil rights movement.

As leader of R&B vocal group The Impressions, Curtis’s superlative falsetto tenor

graced such milestone 1960’s recordings as PEOPLE GET READY and GYPSY WOMAN

Going solo in 1970, his wide scope of compositions ranged from his own funk-driven releases such as

SUPERFLY, FREDDIE’S DEAD and (Don’t Worry) IF THERE’S A HELL BELOW, WE’RE ALL GOING TO GO

to unforgettable hit songs written for fellow artists such as UM, UM, UM, UM, UM, UM by Major Lance,

LET’S DO IT AGAIN by The Staple Singers, RAINBOW by Gene Chandler and

SOMETHING HE CAN FEEL by Aretha Franklin.

The alphabetical list of charted titles below includes YouTube links to a number of the original recordings

and gives you a magnificent overview of Curtis’s extraordinary catalog of achievements.

Also featured are the official label credits among whose names were formidable players in the

Chicago music scene including bassist/arranger/producer Johnny Pate, producer/A&R chief Carl Davis

musician/arranger Riley Hampton, singer/arranger Donny Hathaway, arranger/composer/producer

Richard ‘Rich’ Tufo, promoter/producer Bill Sheppard and trumpeter/arranger/producer Gil Askey.

All songs are solo compositions by Curtis unless otherwise indicated.
